Texas Farm Bureau Highlights West Texas Aoudad and Desert Bighorn Sheep Study

The Texas Farm Bureau has been highlighting the ongoing initiatives to study aoudad, desert bighorn sheep, and mule deer interactions in West Texas. The project is a joint effort between many organizations, including Borderlands Research Institute, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, A & M University, and area landowners.

As the number of aoudad in Far West Texas continues to grow, and the population of mule deer declines, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), Sul Ross State University’s Borderlands Research Institute (BRI) and other partners are working with landowners to study the impact these exotic sheep may have on native mule deer.

Controlling aoudad to save desert bighorn sheep

To protect Texas’ native bighorn sheep population, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the Borderlands Research Institute (BRI) at Sul Ross State University are studying methods to control the growing aoudad (barbary sheep) population in Far West Texas.
