Yearly Movements and Survival of Scaled Quail in the Trans-Pecos, Texas

scaled quail

By Hayley Shultz, Carlos Gonzalez, and Ryan Luna

Most studies on scaled quail have taken place during the breeding season. Little is known on their habitat selection, movements, and survival across the entire year. Our study aims to examine movement patterns and survival throughout each of the seasons for a population of scaled quail in the Trans-Pecos. We placed 40 satellite backpacks on the birds to monitor their locations every four hours. This study will give valuable insight into how habitat preferences change throughout the year and the influence of seasonality on scaled quail survival.
