GRADUATE ASSISTANT

Cesar Garza
Habitat and Rangelands
Ever since he came to Alpine, Cesar has been deeply fascinated by the Chihuahuan Desert, its natural beauty, and its complex ecosystems. Stemming from a youth spent outside in the hills of Southwest Texas, he has always wanted to do something naturalist-related and found the perfect opportunity to do so in the perfect place. He enjoys hiking the many trails and parks of Texas as it provides some great physical benefits, but most importantly serves as a way to connect spiritually. Cesar is currently completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Range and Wildlife Management and working on a project in Brewster County monitoring soil temperature.
Soil temperature is an important factor for several physical, chemical, and microbiological processes in soil and is especially crucial in places like the Chihuahuan Desert where temperatures vary widely. Cesar is assisting with a project that investigates different treatments using varying amounts of ground cover that can influence the soil surface and subsurface directly.
