Low-Technology, Process-Based Restoration in Arid Rangelands

Jason’s research investigates low-cost restoration practices designed to improve water retention and vegetation establishment on degraded Chihuahuan Desert rangelands. The project evaluates treatments that combine native seeding with straw wattles, woody material, and biochar to slow runoff, capture sediment, provide shade, and retain soil moisture. Vegetation and hydrologic responses are compared across treatments and landscape positions to determine how site conditions influence restoration success. This research emphasizes restoring natural processes rather than relying solely on intensive interventions. The findings will provide landowners with practical strategies for reducing erosion, improving soil stability, and encouraging native vegetation recovery under dry and unpredictable conditions.
