Project: Balmorhea Wetland complex Management and Mexican Duck studies in West Texas

Advisor: Dr. Antonio Cantu, Dr. Dan Collins

Sean has always enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether fishing, hunting, or hiking. His experiences in the outdoors led him to develop an interest in wildlife management while completing his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. During this time, he volunteered with the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program for three years, assisting with restoration projects and collecting data on various waterbird and shorebird species. These experiences sparked his interest in working with birds. A summer with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, where he captured and banded Mottled Ducks and Wood Ducks, further solidified his interest in waterfowl research and conservation.

Sean’s master’s project is a two-part project focused on the rehabilitation of the Sandia wetlands in the Balmorhea area. He is developing a management plan to help maintain a healthy and biodiverse wetland for migrating shorebirds, waterbirds, and waterfowl. The other part of his project involves capturing and deploying backpack transmitters on Mexican Ducks (Anas diazi). Mexican Ducks are one of the least-studied waterfowl species in North America and are a non-migrating species endemic to the Chihuahuan Desert. The data collected will help researchers better understand their movements, as well as test for a source-sink dynamic in the Balmorhea area.
