GRADUATE ASSISTANT

Jack Scarborough
Grazing & Habitat Restoration
Jack Scarborough is a rising senior at Virginia Tech, where he is studying Environmental Resource Management with a minor in Environmental Economics. Born in Austin, Texas, he developed a love for the outdoors, which ultimately drove him to pursue his degree and inspired him to deepen his knowledge about the natural world. Motivated by a passion for sustainability and ecological economics, Jack approaches conservation through a broader lens, combining ecological understanding with economic evaluation to support data-driven strategies. Jack says, “You’d be hard pressed to find a more beautiful place to work, and I am thrilled to be learning about and contributing to these impactful projects.”
As an undergraduate technician, Jack has been working on comparing the economies of different grazing systems at the Mimms Ranch, located north of Marfa, TX. Through varied analytic strategies and collaboration with graduate students, he will assign monetary values to grassland and cattle productivity for each grazing system. Jack will also assist with an Apache Corporation project to determine and compare costs of different habitat restoration techniques for well pads in the Permian Basin.
